Diabetes mellitus type 1 (DM1), also known as juvenile or early onset diabetes, is a metabolic disease typified by the progressive destruction and loss of specific pancreatic cells, called beta-cells, which produce and secrete insulin into the bloodstream when blood glucose levels are high. Approximately 7-9% of the U.S. and 5-10% of the Canadian population has DM1, and having DM1 obliges the individual to monitor their blood glucose levels and adhere to a daily regimen of injecting insulin for life. Preventative measures are being researched and medical and complementary studies show promise.
